okay i went to see this today, its on for 116 minutes, but it really didnt feel like it...before we go on,please be warned if you like, that this film is a musical
Posted Image

do you know the story?...Benjamin Barker, gets wrongfully sentanced for...foolishness..and gets sent far away from the streets of London, away from his beloved and his daughter,15 years later Benjamin is back...as Sweeney Todd...never forget, never forgive,he wants his revenge on the judge who set him up,he opens a barbers shop above Mrs Lovett's pie shop, and together they murder a whole range of London folk, dumps the bodies downstairs and makes them into pies

Directed by Tim Burton and Johhny Depp as sweeney and Helena Bonham Carter as Mrs Lovett(these 3 have been together in charlie and the chocolate factory, corpse bride),,Tim Burtons typical vision is right at home here,in 19th century London, and Depp gives us perhaps Capt Sparrow's long lost brother(same accent, only less drunk sounding)

Even though this is a musical,i dont think it should put off any of you that much, the 18certificate is justified, where sweeneys cut throat razor slices the customers throats open and Depp practically bathes in the streaming blood that spurts out
the supporting cast is pretty damn impressive as well,Harry Potters Alan Rickman(Snape)

and Timothy Spall(Peter Petigrew),are great as the evil Judge and his sidekick, also Sacha baron Cohen(Borat) as sweeneys todds rival Italian barber Pirelli is good for a laugh or two

the story is great, the look of olde London town is just as impressive as you would expect of a Tim Burton film...and yes,the songs were fine as well,i knew it was a musical before entering the cinema, they arent sing along type songs, but at least it was something different

Anything bad?,well...if you dont like musicals, stay well away, even if it is another Burton,Depp,Carter one(corpse bride you could count as a musical)...because the script in this i think is more sung than spoken

bad blood, not that the blood in this film was that bad,i have seen less convincing blood, but in this film it looked a bit too light, perhaps thats how Tim Burton wanted it to be,i dont know...but the amnount of blood, was still great

not sure if it was the cinema i was in or what, but London town in the dark, was a bit too dark for me,i could hardly see what was going on,relief when the flashbacks (and also a cute little dream sequence of Helena Bonham Carter)was during the day with lots of vibrant colour....but present day wasnt all bad though later scenes has olde london town during the day as well

i liked this film,i dont mind some musicals..maybe i am swayed because how much i love Tim Burton films..if you are a guy, take the girlfriend/wife for the songs, although she may not favour all the blood.

anyway i reckon this is a 8 metal orphans out of 10 movie...a difficult movie actually to recommend,as i know singing isnt everyones cup of tea, they want action ...well here is gore and singing and also take into account that i love all kinds of movies unless Skins hero steven seagal is in it

and sorry for so many posts on the review,PS3 is super shit FIXED 16/06/08

hmm,i would say yeah..definetly,maybe he will not like it as much as the broadway or maybe he will love the fact that they have made an actual movie from it...and to be fair, its pretty brave of keeping it a musical, with todays audiences...but they do seem to be creeping back, with moulin rouge a few years ago and when at seeney todd i saw a trailer for mamma mia another musical with meryl streep, colin firth and pierce brosnan...but i hate ABBA,so i will be steering clear of that

we seem to get the old trend coming back, just like clint eastwoods unforgiven brought back the western when everyone said it was dead andf ridley scotts gladiator bring back the sword and sandals epic

silent movies will be back soon, you watch, lol

I saw this movie just before I got sick a couple of weeks ago. I completely agree on the blood. It just didn't look red enough. To orangie for me. And too thin. It should have been thicker and spurter more like it was pulsing. But it just came out in one larpe spray.

I really didn't like the ending in that nothing was shown about wraping up his daughter's story and guy who's going to rescue her.

I thought Depp was doing a pretty good job singing (and I agree he sounded like a sober Captain Jack) that was until I heard the young boy sing his love song to Mrs. Lovett. His voice was just fantastic. After that Depp and Helena BC sounded just passing fair.

To me it seemed like the direction during the singing number seemed constrained. Almost like Burton didn't quite know how to stage or direct them. The nonsinging scenes were brilliantly done and had the Burton touch.

maybe wait for the DVD(or at least tell your dad to wait)....like i said,it is a hard film to recommend, even if i did enjoy it...maybe it could of got a bigger audience by taking away the songs

and Pen,i wasnt paying attention of the young lads singing,as the young lady and her heaving breasts were on the screen while she was up in the window
........Depp and Carters songs were a little more tongue in cheek i felt, especially the song when them two first meet in the pie shop with all the cockroaches scuttling about

oh,and sorry to hear you have been sick Pen,hope you are all better now

and Barb, being in New York, does that mean your dad takes full advantage of the broadway musicals?
