Ok, so i went to See Avatar. The story is about Jack Sully (Sam Worthington) a crippled marine. Whos' brother dies while involved with the "avatar" project. Due the DNA similarities he then picks up where his brother left off and uses what would have been his brothers' avatar. Thing is, his brother was very clever scientist and he is just a grunt.
Anyways, the mission is for Jake infiltrate the Tribe to get them to move their home "diplomatically", so the corporation can mine this mega-rare valuable metal call "Unobtainium" that is directly below the "Home tree" of the tribe. Sully meets (and falls for one of the Tribe) but also becomes one of the tribe and is see as kinda "chosen one" for something. Time runs out and the the Corporation decide to Home Tree by force.
The film is very good but is very very long (3hrs) and there were bits of the film that should/could have been cut. There was like 3 scenes of training/initiation (one for hunting, one for riding and another for flying). Now by the time we got to the 3rd "training level", i did begin to think this is becoming a bit of a CGI wank fest, and that has cost it few stars for me. it is Visually spectacular. I have never seen such incredible visuals since a huge triangle shaped space ship flew over my head some 30years ago.
The story just about hung 2gether, it was a bit "tree huggy" and the environmental undercurrents were too blatant to ignore, and that kinda bugged having this "we are the bad guys and we must do more to save this planet" (especially when Jim Cameron's weekly carbon emissions are probably more than what all of us here kick out in a year)
To sum up, the film was good but i do feel the special FX and the 3D were kinda propping up what i feel was, once you stripped all the "CGI Dick measuring, a pretty bog standard film If i didnt see this in 3D, i think i would have come a way saying " well...its ok, but nothing amazing"
All in all 7 SkinToxications out of 10, make sure you go and see it on 3D, otherwise this will struggle to be a 6 out of 10
Well i went and saw this last night and i couldnt wait till the weekend to do a review Trailer 1st
what a film!!! truly, truly amazing and very moving
the plots is, 28 yrs ago and alien ship stops over Jo'burg in South Africa. After months of speculation and no signs of aliens, the humans break into the craft as discover 1million aliens (Prawns) either sick or dying. The government set up a area for them to live in names District 9 and the Aliens leave peacefully but in squalid conditions. back to the present day and the citizen have had enough of them and want them moved (the Xenophobic racial undertones are more than apprent) and and area named District 10 is setup some 200km away.
Wikus van de Merwe (pronounced "Vickers") put in charge of the "formality" of issuing eviction notices to all the inhabitants of District 9. Vickers is a bit of a nervy nerdy guy but a good man with a huge heart. During the the process of issuing the notice to one of the shacks, Vckers is sprayed with a liquid from a strange unknown canister. He is admitted to hospital after becoming very ill and is discovered he is mutating into on of the Prawns. He his forced to escape a medical research facility when they(the humans) try to "harvest" his body for genetics after it is discovered he is the only human that can used(fire) the (vastly superior) Alien Weapons.
I wont go any further than that and spoil it. But this film was absolutley amazing! its shot with a mix of Docu-camera follawing Vickers, CNNesque TV report and security cameras as well "normal filmograpy" but still in that kind of "docu-style"
its a very moving film as what happens to Vicker is made all the more horrid by him being a really good, honest and caring guy (the little guy/brother you wanna look out for) and you really feel for his situation as the films goes on. I nearly shed a tear at the end of day one when he pulls a piece of manky cardboard over him as he tries to get some sleep in one of the vacant shacks as he flees back to District 9
Really really loved this film, took me a while to get to sleep last night as it really got me thinking. would love to see this again. Its so good i think if i bought on Bluray, it might cheapen the experience and watching it at my lesiure may numb incredible feel/tone the movie has.
Been meaning to do a review for a while now but its just been to damn hot out and too damn busy in work.
I wont do a Youtube as you have probably seen it, so i will dive right in
I was waiting for this fim like the coming of Christ. This is the Big summer film, so did it deliver? The answer is a resounding yes, but it not without its pit falls I wont got to far into the story but Sam Starts College, while Megan Fox (another future Mrs SkinToxicated) straddles motor cycles. The story twists and turns quite abit, i have actually had to stop typing and think what actually happened........Oh, yeah, Sam finds a piece of the Allspark and begins to have these freak outs, and that then leads to the Matrix of leadership and that is related to the Primes (to which Optimus is the last) and a Transformer called the Fallen needs it to,....Erm, actually i cant remember how eveything ties in. And this one (if not its biggest problem). The film seems to be so tied up in its action sequences (and there are plenty of those, Prime fighting 3 Decepticons at once was awesome!), it gets to a point where they have to press the pause button and explaing what the hell is going on, which is done by Sky/Jetfire on a kinda "flash back story" (which i think is a cheap way of telling a story). They all end up in Eygpt and it all kicks off
dont read unless you want to be spoiltClick for read!
yes Prime did die, but he did come back, thru some convaluted means
[Close]
The more i read this back, the more it looks like i didnt like the fim. I did like the film, but it did seem to groan under its own weight, its almostas if the actually had trouble spending the budget. There were bits in the film that i thought could have been cut. Sams mum eating a hash at the college and getting high and doing some emmbarrasing things, which was funny and i was lolling but i didnt move the story along. Another exmaple is the inclusion of 2 Autobots called the "Twins" and they were the kinda Artoo and Threepio of the film (but nowhere near as good) and they were really funny and had me laughing all the time, but thye didnt serve anything to the film, and considering this film is knocking on the door of the 2 and a half hour club, you felt it was unnecessary.
I really did like the film, and i will get this on bluRay, but it just felt a bit too big for the screen and it seemed to lack depth. If you are gonna go and see this film leave your brain at the door and just sit back and watch one fo rthe most visually spectacular films ever
all in all, 8 out of 10, not as good as Star Trek but better than Terminator
Well i managed to find someone to go with. Man, what a film! you know the story this is prequel to how Jame T Kirk rises thru the ranks of Starfleet and how the crew of the Enterprise became to be.
The film is great, a strong story backbone. Eric Bana play a Romulan on a quest for revenge against Spock across time and space. dont wanna give too much away but Leonard Nimoy plays than just a Cameo role, and Sylar plays an awesome "early Spock" All of the films budget is up on the screen as it is visually spectacular. There are plenty of homages to the old Star Trek that that will keep the old skool happy (I am not a big trekkie fan, but i was picking them up thick and fast). You can really see how the actors have threaded themselves into the charaters, the guy that played Bones was just brillant, Simon Pegg did a great Scotty (would have been nice to get him into the film sooner, but it was justified when and where they intoduced him).
The film fleshed out Kirks backstory, including the famous question of how he beat the "unwinnable" Kobayashi Maru training program. See below for some history (its not from the film so there is no spoiler and will add a layer to the film)
loved the film, wouldnt mind seeing it again. definate Bluray purchase
I went and saw this last week, i have been meaning to a do review but as yup may know, i have had my PC in bits for most of this week. The standard issue trailer
i wont go into the story as you probably know what its all about (its about Logan/Jimmy becomes Wolverine). The film is good but i was expecting more. It kinda struggles to all hang together. There are holes in the plot line and the film plugs them very weakly, the whole reason behind his decision to have an "Anamantium bath" is a bit thin (crosses and double crosses) is a prime example.
The way the other charatacters are featured feels more like a montage rather than a story. The way they put guys like Gambit in feels unnecessary, we know they have to feature but it feels when you see them, their part fo the plot could have been anyone, as that bit of the story doesnt really give Gambit (for exmaple) a chance to properly shine, it could have been anyone with a "power", its almost like when they were writing it they said "ok we will put an Xman in this bit, we dont know who yet"
another thing that is a bit of let down, is all the action sequences you see in the trailer are all the action sequences and they spectaular but you expect there to be some more.
All in all, its not a bad film, its a good film, but I was expecting this to be one if the biggies this summer, no i can see why its come out b4 the like of Transformers, Star Trek, Terminator etc
6 skintoxications out of 10, but i was hoping this would have been atleast an 8
I was meant to do a review When I saw this when it 1st come out at the cinema, the Mrs got for me on DVD for Valentines and i thought i must do a review
Liam Neeson (the most forgetable Jedi) plays an overprotective, separated father and former CIS enforcer (read into that as you will), whos daughter (who "is like, totally annoying") gets kidnapped on a trip to Europe by people trafficers. She is taken while he is on the phone to her, He then goes about using all his "skills" to track her down and basically kick as much arse en route.
the film is brillant, a real rollercoaster of a story, Neeson is brillant (for a change), This film is a bit like Commando, but alot more believable (and with alot more depth) and has a kinda "Bourne" feel to. The torture scene had me laughing and cringing at the same time with Neesons almost "Casual sadisticness", that is sustained thru the film as he basically goes thru Europe, dishing out some supreme kickings to get info on his daughter
I really really enjoyed this film, not many people spoke about it(didnt storm at the BO), but if it came up in conversation amongst my mates, it had nothing but praise
if you have a spare £15/$20 you could do alot, lot worse than buy this film Gotta be 9 SkinToxications out of 10
Well, as promised I am gonna a review of the Film Iron Man.
You will have to excuse the fact that i am not affay with the Marvel/comicbook universe, so I will be review this film at "Face Value"
Robert Downey Jr plays womanising, one liner wonder Tony Stark the CEO of Stark Industries "The" Weapons Developement company, on the way back from a successful demonstration in the desert of his Jericho Missle, his convoy (which includes American soliders) is attacked by terrorsists killing everyone but him (with weapons made by Stark Industries). He has an electro magnet put in his chest which is stopping shapnel pentrating further into his heart and is force to build the Jericho missle for his captors. He doesnt, he modifies the power source for the magnet(which was a car battery) which also inturn also powers his MK1 Iron man suit to escape.
He comes back a changed man, saying that he will not build weapons that kill the people they are meant to protect. Stark Industies then turns against him (hmmm, shades if Brian Osbourne and Oscorp in Spiderman maybe?) Anyways, he continues to develop his suit (with some great sequencies that keeps what could be a dull part of the film interesting). I wont give too must away, but there are some double crosses and a few holes in the plot but you let it go as it is a good film will some great action sequencies (shades of Transformers in the fight scenes).
you do feel they held the film back slighty so it can really get into its stride in Iron Man II and Gwyenth Paltrow (one of the future Mrs Toxicated's) is seriously underused (you bearly see her legs!) as Pepper Potts All in all, a good film and i thoughly enjoyed it, RDj was brillant, he was the bastard you wanna be but a good guy at the same time. 4 Skintoxications out of 5. Oh and just to note, stay and watch the all credits as there is a sequence at the end which sows the seeds for Iron Man2
Well, another week, another Skin Movie review This week its Hancock
Will Smith plays and Anti superhero Hancock, he drinks, he lives like a bum and he dont care. He takes down the bad guys but leaves a path of destruction in his wake costing the city millions, as a biproduct everyone hates him. He saves the life of some PR guy who then suggests Hancock try and be the superhero he should be. Hancock is sent to prison for all the damage he has done, the PR guy takes this opportunity to try and get thru to him to change. while inside the crime level in the city goes thru the roof and the people come to the relization they need Hancock. Hancock is released a new man and goes about doing things the right way and the public start to love him. The film goes alot deeper than that but i dont wanna spoil it
This film was fucking brillant! it made me laugh, great onliners, some edge of the seat stuff, it had real moving bits in it (Mrs said she nearly cried at one point (big softy)). They gave him a backstory and everything. Will Smith was awesome as per usual. It was that good a superhero film i was half expecting Tony Stark and Nick Fury to approach him about the Vengance Intiative at the end
I actually wanna go and see this again, definatley gonna buy this on DVD/Bluray,
A high enjoyable, highly entertaining film 5 SkinToxications out of 5
Went and saw this last night but first off, here is the trailer:
Wesley Gibson (James McAvoy) is stuck in a job he hates in a life he hates, meadering thru a worthless existence (hmm, sounds firmilar) until a lady called "Fox" (Angelina Jolie) scoops him up (literally) and shows him another world, a world he was destined to be in. A "Fraterntity of Assassins" the has been around for centuries. He is told that his father (who left when he was 7days old) was the best and was killed by another Fraternity member who went "Rogue" a guy referred to as "X" or "Cross", they train him up to join the Fraternity and to avenge his Fathers death (why didnt they just call him Luke Skywalker?)
The film is really good, plenty of action and oneliners and a nice peppering of humour. The film takes a twist half way thru that pushed my suspense of disbelief right to the edge. The gun fight/work borrows heavily from the matrix (but without the mega over the top bullettime SFX), the bullet bending etc was done in a way that made it believable
i really enjoyed the film, as i said, the "twist bit" and the "Weaving thing" (dont want to give anyhting away) is where it got a bit thin from me but i let it slide as it is a rollercoaster of a movie. its worth the price of admission just to see Morgan Freeman swear!
I will say 7 Intoxications out of 10
Will i buy this on DVD? definaltey. Would got further and buy it on Bluray? a good possiblility
someone pleez, pleez feed Angelina Jolie, she was so thin!
Well the Mrs and i went and saw Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull
oh dear..... we all know that Harrison Ford is like 65 so its understandable it wasnt gonna be the roller coaster of "Temple of Doom" or "Raiders". but this was weak at best. Ford looked tired on screen, a shell of the Indy we know and love, whether that was on purpose or not i dunno, The Story line was just awful, it wasnt about finding something, it more about returning it (WTF?!) so there was no chase/pursuit, it was just a backward treasure hunt,I couldnt understand what it was all about and then when the ending did reveal itself it was very poor, it went more Sci Fi than Mythology (bad move). Shave your Boosh, I mean Shia Le Beaof, did his best, but he played some tough rebel kid, it would have been better if they had him as a nerd at least then he could of added some of that "complimentary chaos" that he does so well. This film didnt compliment the other films, it merely rode on it coat tails. there were a few funny bits but it didnt even close to compensating you for a film that lacked direction and pace. The Phantom Menace of the Indy films
2 out of 5, no, 2 out of 10
Why is it that when George Lucas is given a lolly stick, a rubber band and 30 bucks he make some of the most amazing films ever, give him a blank cheque and he makes crap?
well i went and saw this last night thought i would do a review. The last AVP i liked, granted it wasnt brillant but i thought it was alot better than what i thought it was gonna be. this however is the other way round
a no Star cast adds the human element to the film, the only "star" i did recognise was someone who look firmilar from Stargate but even then, i could be wrong.
The film starts straight off the back of the last one (you know, when the Alien bursts out of the Predator and it and Alien-Predator Hybrid, it causes the ship to crash back on earth (which happens to have some face huggers on it that find there way on the poeple that you dont care about). Planet Predator sends one (one?) Predator to sort it out and it all goes down hill from there. how? i hear you ask?, Well thing is, as the Predator goes around trying to sort things, he tries to cover up the evidence and stuff that, since when have Predators given a shit who knows they are there? The film rides on the coat tails of the Aliens and Predator films right down to the armouroed personel carrier chase and someone even says "Get to the Chopper!". The events of this film happens over one night and in the rain, now i dunno about you, but I cant see much when sitting in a dark room watching night scenes, so most of the Predator and Alien fight scenes were nothing more than just flashes of light, i couldnt tell what the hell was going on
I am trying to think of a witty sign off summary, but i cant.oh hang on: Avoid this like the targeting sight from a shoulder mounted laser cannon 2 "ugly Muthafuckers" out of 5
ok, Last week i went and saw Hitman, the latest in the game/Movie Crossover and lets be honest pretty much all of these films have sucked (Maybe Doom and the Res Evils just scrapped by as viewable). So i was expecting this film to be crap. As Obi Wan once said "I was wrong"
It was pretty good, no, it was really good and even my Mrs said she liked it.
I have never played the Hitman series but i picked up the gaming undercurrents very easily so you dont need to be a fan of the game (When he walks past 2 kids who are playing Hitman was one of the obviousesse (is that even a word?))
A muscled out and freshly scalped Timothy Olymant (badguy in DieHard 4.0) plays Agent 47, A hit man hired out by various Governments to knock off various high profile people. On one job somehow he gets doubled crossed and the only"loose end" who can verify that he was setup is the skinniest woman i have ever seen.
There are more and twisted and turns than a bucket of snakes but it never goes over the top (this film does borrow from Bourne Identitys) and has one of the coolest fight scenes ever. Its Starts off with 4 other "Agents" pointing their guns at 47 who then says "How about dying with a bit of dignity?" to which that drop their guns and pull out fucking swords! This film wasnt just a shoot'em up cash in on a game franchise, the Story line kept me going (some points i was actually on the edge of my seat) very nicely filmed slick but edgey at the same time.
This film was very good, granted it wont get any Oscars, but I thoroughly enjoyed it and will be parting with my hard earned for the DVD
Went and saw this film last night, and it gotta be said I havent laughed some much at a cinema for ages!
Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead/Spaced) plays PC Nicholas Angel, one of the best police officers the Met (Metropolitan Police) has ever had. Problem is, he is that good he is making the rest of his force look bad, so the promote him to Sargeant and move him out of London to a quiet, rural town of Glouster when nothing ever happens. A trail of suspicious deaths occour and everyone but Nick sees them as no more than accidents, Nick looks further into these deaths and begins to uncover a far more sinister side of this apparently sleepy town.
This may sound like a bit of a horror/thriller flick but it is pure comedy. I cant tell you much more without given the story away.
There is plenty of the Splat Gore comedy but its just so funny, i never laugh so much at seeing granny being kicked in the face!
This film is that good that i think i will go and see it again, and that is saying something (the last film I saw more than once was Phantom Menace, and that was to make sure I had seen the right film!)
I would love to know how this will go down across the pond
gotta give this film the full 5 chainsaw !
ok, last night friend and I went out on a limb and saw Smokin Aces;
Basic storyline is, a magician in vegas gets in with the mafia enjoys the high life, but things go sideways and he agrees to give evidence that will bring them down in exchange to go into an FBI protection progam, new identity etc
A contract goes out on his life and there are about 6 killers that step up to do the job, ranging from serious profressional hitman to ragtag headbanging wannabes and the FBI have to get to him b4 the hitmen do.
Plenty of twists and turns, crosses and double crosses, the sick humour, plenty of wise cracks thru out with Good/Bad guys on both side sides
its shot in a very Tarrantino/Richie style, untraditional/weird but is still very good film in its own right, by that i mean its weird but still an excellent film, unlike the Tarrantino films that poeple think are good just because they weird/unique with Tarrantinos name on it.
Ray Liotta is in and is good playing an FBI agent (sorry I aint good with names and the Characters, i just watch the film)
Ben Affleck plays a different role and does well
I would give it 4 out of 5, i would like to think that this film sets a new benchmark with regards to these Gangster/hitman indie-esque films
and it has plently of Alisha Keys in thigh high boots! Schwiing!
